    A town which forms part of the borough of Tameside on the East side of Manchestor. Population (1991) 35,820.

    One of its claims to fame is that in 2019/20 its railway station was in fifth place on the list of least used stations in the country with just 92 passengers in the year. Mind you, only two trains a week stop there!

    A village in Huntingdon District near Glatton and south west of Yaxley. Part of Denton and Caldecote parish.

    A village just off the main A607 road between Grantham and Melton Mowbray. It is close to Belvoir Castle.

    The parish includes within its boundaries a stretch of the Grantham Canal and the Denton Reservoir a source of water for the canal.

  • Denton, Newcastle upon Tyne

    An area and an electoral ward within the City of Newcastle upon Tyne. The ward encompasses the Chapel House and West Denton housing areas.

    It is the site of Milecastle 9 on Hadrian's Wall.

    A small village about 6 miles south-east of Northampton in the South Northamptonshire District.

  • Denton, North Yorkshire*

    A hamlet situated 1 mile north east of Ilkley in the Harrogate District. Denton Hall, once home of the Fairfax family, is located in the hamlet.

  • Denton, Oxfordshire*

    A hamlet in the parish of Cuddesdon and Denton. It is in the South Oxfordshire District five miles south-east of Oxford.

    NB This is NOT the fictional Denton, reputedly located in Oxfordshire, which features in the "Touch of Frost" television series.

  • Denton Holme, Cumbria

    An inner city district in the city of Carlisle, Denton Holme is usually regarded as a "village within the city" and is situated to the south-west of the city centre on the western bank of the River Caldew.

    A district within the Metropolitan Borough of St Helens. It is located approximately one mile north of the centre of St Helens.

  • Nether Denton, Cumbria

    A small scattered village and civil parish twelve miles north-east of Carlisle. It includes St Cuthbert's Church, built on the site of a Roman fort, and Denton Hall. Denton Fell, 255 metres, is a nearby hill.

  • Upper Denton, Cumbria

    Another small village and civil parish fifteen miles north-east of Carlisle near Gilsland. The village is situated to the south of the course of Hadrian's Wall and is close to the northern end of the Pennine Way.

  • Denton Ward, West Norfolk

    Denton used to be the name of a Ward at the southern end of the Borough of King's Lynn and West Norfolk. It comprised the parishes of: Feltwell, Hockwold, Methwold, Northwold and Southery. These are all on the edge of the fens with large areas only just above sea level.

    It appears to be named after Denton's Lodge a 18th century house in Feltwell parish built by a Captain Denton. It had connections with smuggling, cockfighting and King George IVth!

    Sadly, the 2019 ward reorganisation split the parishes into two new wards, so Denton Ward is no more.

  • Denton City, Texas

    Located in Denton County, it has a population (2007) of 105,550. Links were established between Denton, Norfolk and Denton, Texas in 2000 during the Millenium celebrations. A number of American Red Oak trees were planted in Rogerson's Wood to commemorate this linkage and are growing well.

    A small unincorporated community.
    Denton was laid out in 1905, and named after a railroad employee.

    A small unincorporated community in what is called the "Bootheel" area of the state.
    The community is named after Neil V. Denton, the original owner of the site.

    A town in Fergus County with a population (2000) of 301.

    A village in Lancaster County. It is part of the Lincoln, Nebraska Metropolitan Statistical Area. Population (2000) - 189.

    A town in Davidson County with a population (2000) of 1,450.

  • Denton County, Texas

    A county forming part of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. It is one of the fastest-growing counties in the United States. Its population grew from 432,976 recorded in the 2000 census to 662,614 in the 2010 census, to an officially estimated 734,000 in 2015. The county seat is the City of Denton (see above). The county and the city are both named after John B. Denton (1806-1841) who was a preacher, lawyer and soldier.

Several "Denton Road"s have been noted. Not surprisingly, neighbouring Alburgh, Bedingham, Earsham and Topcroft all have one but another can be found in Norwich close to the Sprowston Road.

In Fiction

  • "A Touch of Frost" (TV series)

    Many people's knowledge of Denton will be limited to this very popular television programme which ran on UK ITV from 1992 until 2010, initially based on the Frost novels by R.D. Wingfield.

    The exact location of this fictional Denton was never confirmed but all the clues provided indicated somewhere in Oxfordshire.

  • "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" (Film) and its sequel "Shock Treatment"

    The location for both these films, released in 1975 and 1981 respectively, was Denton, Texas.
